Brewers' spent grain as main
by-product for development
of novel, high-performance
bio-based polymers, polymer blends, and co-polymers

POLYMEER aims to establish a sustainable, bio-based value chain for bioplastic products, using brewers' spent grain (BSG) as feedstock.

The entire production process is involved, starting with the fractionation of BSG into key biopolymers (cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin), which are then transformed into specific polymers and copolymers using green, waste-minimising processes. The final stage involves blending, formulating and processing to create bioplastics suitable for three applications: agricultural mulch films, automotive textiles, and tertiary packaging films.
